Комарно (Komarno)

So on Saturday before Easter Adria and I decided to go visit the town from which her grandparents and her father are from and when the Pruchnicky side of my family are from. We went to the cemetery to pay our respects to our rodyna, then took a walk through town. We saw the historic Kostel, and then walked past Adria's baba's house, towards my Babunia's house and had a snack at the fabled "figura" when apparently young couples would sneak out for late night rendez-vous. On the way back we saw that the old wooden church which was destroyed had been rebuilt. I was quite an experience.

So we drove through Ivano Frankivsk in the pooring rain. Ended up in the spa town of Truskavetz. AKA Wonderland. We were treated so well at the hotel didn't even ask for a passport. We ended up eating in a "Club" the place had pool tables a bowling alley, restaurant and movie theatre. Next day we went to Naftusia where all the healing springwater comes from. they have special glasses so that you can sip it without smelling the stinky water. other things of interest were the verka serduchka

The heart of Hutzulshchyna.... We stayed In Kolomya. It made a perfect jumping off point from which to visit Yaremche and Kosiv. The Staff at the Pysanka hotel went above and beyond the call of duty to make us feel as at home as possible and the hotel overlooks the main maidan of the city. Yaremche was a cute little resort town. Although overcast the weather held and we were able to spend the day walking. We went to the souvenir rynok and although rediculously expensive I've never seen such a collection of vyshyvky pysanky and all kinds of other things like leather work and furs. the highlight of the trip was the Stejky Dovbusha. Oleksa dovbush was a robinhood of the area. The hike ends at Skela Dovbusha or cliffs of dovbush. Kosiv we were told had a great rynok sadly it only happens on saturday. after wandering the city for a couple of hours in the pouring rain we went for chenakhy and checked out a couple of shops and went home. sadly the only shot we took was of the secondhand clo...

After a shoddy welcome to Chernivtzi riding a stinking over packed marshrutka, and being gouged by a taxi because I made some tactical mistakes, then paying a relatively expensive price in a hotel under renovations, then not being able to find a restaurant, We had a very pleasant Kvitna nedilya with beautiful weather while a traffic accident went on outside. After lunch on the maidan and having little children chase pidgeons towards us while we ate, we went to see the University of Chernivtzi what a beautiful campus.

Хотин-Khotyn

So this Medieval fortress was built by the poles and then other then a brief period with the Turks was a border fortress between the Romanians and the Poles. It switched sides many times. The place was very cool but very under developed and was a bit of a trek out of the city. you had to travel about 20 mins by marshrut to get there and then another 5 mins by cab. I would say worth seeing as a secondary site to KP or worth stopping on the way to Chernivtzi but not worth a special trip at this phase in it's development.

So Friday Morning we grabbed some MacDonalds, and grabbed a train to Ternopil. It was the first time I've ever U-boat class (Platz Kart) I expected much worse. I assume that when it's full of drunk and stinky people it's less pleasant. After falling asleep we woke up and rushed off the train. Our first site was Halyna's favorite garbage can. Next we headed off to see the man made lake in the middle of the city. Too bad the weather wasn't cooperating because it seems to be a very pretty place. Please notice the lady selling fish and Virgin Club. We next got onto a bus and headed off at 20kms per hour (i kid you not there was a guy on a bike that was keeping up with the bus) for our 3 hour drive thank god they stuffed garbage into the air vents to ward off protyah. We found our first choice hotel Ukraina. We ended up at Hotel Ksenia clearly a better choice with pool and sauna.... Kamyanetz is incredible, the people were wonderfully helpful , the city is developed for tourists and relati...

Ottawa gets 70cm/48hrs

So, went home for an extended long weekend to celebrate tato's birthday which was on March 2nd. Little did I realise that we'd have two back to back record snowfall days. friday we got approx 20cms of snow (made the bus ride home 2 hours longer) Saturday we got 41cm by midnight (one day record for ottawa) and another 9cm after midnight.

Normally ottawa averages about 250cm of snow per season the record is 459cm which happened in 1971. Currently we're at 420 cm... for some perspective the benches on the deck sit about 5 ft (1m 60cm) above the ground. Step is 5'11. Where I was standing the snow on flat ground is past my waist, As you can see in the pics of our front yard the snowbanks from cleaning the walk are almost up to the second storey of the house.

Other then that Olex and I had a photo shoot in the snow because we're that sexy. and then the family had Apres Shi (as ze chermans say) in our long underwear. Frankewycz ya z haduvav yak my na balcony tanziuvaly v gatzyakh.

Andrew WK Feb. 2008

Tied with Gogol Bordello for best show EVER. I've never seen the crowd in such a frenzy. So the opening act sucked there was an out of shape guy in his tighty whitey's screaming into the mike. Next was a group Priestess who have a song in guitar hero 3. They were really hard but a very talented group. Last came the man of the evening Andrew WK. They had a look alike contest and andrew came out at the end. He asked all the contestants to dance on stage with him. Then announced "this isn't a concert, it's a party. Anyone who wants to dance, get up on stage. That's when the party really started. As you can see Olex and Mary Kate spent most of their time on stage right next to him. He let the crowd sing "Party Hard" and went crowd surfing. The last song he did, he put olex on his shoulders. the pics are blurry but they get the point across. Sniggy you're the best. We need to hangout more often.

So Step, Cummings, and Shane and I all decided to go see Rambo IV. On the way there we decided to go to Nathan Philips Square and check out Tokyo Police Club. While TPC SUCKED ass, Winterfest was awesome. There were french artists who made what can be closest described as candlabras. Rought Iron, some clay pots and giant candles made with denim wicks.... AWESOME. Check it

Ada's Sydney Invasion Sept. 2007

Sydney really is Canada with nice weather! So I went to visit the Cyst-or for two weeks and this is what I saw. There were lots of things I don't have pictures of such as the drowned bloated maggot ridden rat floating in a bucket on Olex's roomates balcony, or the time when there was a moth in my pants, seeing my freind Q, or when we saw the "employees" at the brothel going in to get ready, or when the moth was in my beer, or the attack of the fuit bats, or that time when Lubo ate his weight in Dominos pizza.... wait a minute that was Chunk, in Gooneys! Anyways I had a wicked time seeing a day in the life of Olex downunder. I had a great time meeting all of her freinds, Danny Jasmine, Joel from the band along with his mates, Adam and Justin, the Doc (you know who you are) Lesia, Nadia, Tanya. The Saawaalaagaaaaaa Brothers (Dan Tim you crack me up). Special thanks to Lubo, Tim, Justin (yes and Tanya for arranging it), and Halia who all played chauffeur and took me to experience all kind...

Adria's Going away party Sept 15th

Well, in a little less then a week our Adria is off for 6months in Lviv. So before she left we decided to throw her an Ukraina themed party filled with costumes, gowns, Pickled Herring, Swedes, and family. The location was none other then the LLBO. The gang that planned it out did a wonderful job. By luck we were blessed with Karaoke and a bar filled with locals. It was the perfect mix! Have a safe trip Adria we'll miss

Drag Racing

So, this weekend I took my lady and brofus to Luskville Dragway. Normally this is an amateur 1/4 mile Drag raceway. This weekend there were Juniors, Amateurs, Semi-Pros and Super Charged Pros. This is a video of the Super Charged Pros Burn out I'm told they do this to clean the crap off their tires and to lay down rubber for better traction. At the end of the clip the camera wobbles. What that is, is me trying to cover my ears it was so loud I actually hurt myself.
